Hawaii Garden Building

Back in 2009, a distinctive garden project took shape on the shores of Hawaii. Their architect envisioned a landscape that would blend the tranquility of traditional Chinese garden design with the natural beauty of the Pacific islands – and at the heart of this vision were Chinese glazed roof tiles.


Traditional Chinese roof tiles were selected to crown the garden pavilions, which stood just steps from the beach. The vibrant yellow orange glaze of these glazed ceramic roof tiles caught the Hawaiian sunlight, creating a striking contrast against the deep blue ocean and lush tropical greenery. The project required not just any roofing material, but traditional Chinese roofing materials that could withstand coastal conditions while maintaining their aesthetic integrity.


A Chinese architect was engaged to oversee the installation, and an interesting technique was employed – the tiles were fixed without concrete, a method that met local building requirements while staying true to traditional craftsmanship. This approach would later inspire other clients on similar projects.

Fast forward 15 years. These buildings still look timeless and beautiful today. The Chinese glazed roof tiles have proven their durability in Hawaii's tropical climate – resisting salt spray, intense UV exposure, and seasonal rains without fading or losing their structural integrity. The glaze continues to protect the ceramic body beneath.
