Huizhou Architecture Hongcun

Hongcun was founded in the Southern Song Dynasty Shao Xi years (AD 1190 - 1194). Formerly a land where Wang surnamed inhabit in. It has been more than 800 years history. It is backed by Huangshan Yumai Sheep Stack Ridge, Leigang Mountain, etc. The terrain is relatively high. The rosy clouds are slowly rising, sometimes as thick and heavy, and sometimes it seems like splashes of ink. It really resembles a long scroll of mountains and rivers. So it is known as “the village in Chinese painting".

The cattle-shaped villages and artificial water systems be built by the hongcun ancients. The village is one of the spectacles in the architecture history today. Towering and verdant Lei Cang is the cow's head. The old trees that reach into the sky are ox horns. The well-arranged residential group from the east to the west is like a huge cow body. The clear spring which be called “ox intestine” pass through the village. Then flow into the moon pond which is known as “ox stomach”. Finally filter and flow into the Southern Lake which looks like ox tripe. The ancient people also built four bridges along the village successively to serve as ox legs. The ingenious and scientific village water system design not only solved the fire fighting water for the villagers, but also adjusted the temperature, provided convenience for residents' production and domestic water use.

There are more than 140 well-preserved buildings in the village which built with the grey color clay roof tiles and white wall in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The "Chengzhitang" is magnificent and gorgeous, and it is the most ancient folk house in southern Anhui. The pavilions and pavilions of Nanhu Academy are in harmony with lakes and mountains, beauty each other. All of them are traditional Huizhou architectural styles. Jing Xiu Tang, Dong Xian Tang, San Li Tang, and Xu Ren Tang, or generous, or simple and dignified. The towering old trees in the village, the old vines on the wall of the residence, the centuries-old peony in the court can be described as a beautiful scenery everywhere. But also reflect the extensive and deep cultural heritage left from the long history .
