Screen Wall

        Screen wall is the wall  facing the gate of a Chinese house; it is a important unit of traditional

Chinese architecture, aiming at blcoking the line of the sight.

     Screen wall has 2 patterns: one is the wall facfing with the gate, the other is the wall with

carved murals

     The screen wall, made of  bricks， has three parts, the base, the body and the roof. Of course,

there are some screen walls without bases.

    According to the materials, it can be divided into 3  kinds:  clay brick screen wall, glazed

screen wall, stone screen wall and wood screen wall. stone screen wall and wood screen

wall are seldom used.

   Glazed screen walls are mainly used in the royal palace and temples, such as the Nine-dragon

screen wall in the forbidden City and the North Sea Park in Beijing.

    Clay brick screen walls are mainly appeared in the fork buildings, as the main patterns of

the trasitional screen wall

    Stone screen wall, is carved from the stone, such as the Iron screen wall in North Sea Park.
