Chinese Roof Ornament---Small Animals

There are many small animal statues on the hip ridges on the Chinese traditional building roofs. Why are these animal statues installed on the roof? What do they stand for?

Installed on the very front of the hip ridge, it is the statue of immortal man riding a cock and it is the leader of these animals. It is said it can change danger into safety.

Horse is behind Lion. It is said the horse can chase the sun and drive the wind, it is the sincere and brave beast in Chinese myth.

 

Fish is behind Horse. It is said the fish can bring the rain, it can prevent the house from fire.
