How to achieve warm winter and cool summer in ancient Chinese architecture?

Chinese ancient architecture is one of the unique architectural forms in the world, which not only embodies the crystallization of the wisdom of ancient Chinese people in design and craftsmanship, but also boasts its warm winter and cool summer characteristics. This excellent insulation effect has made ancient buildings an ideal place for the Chinese people to live over the long history.

How can ancient buildings provide warmth during cold winters and maintain coolness and comfort during hot summers?

The lifting beam structure is an ancient architectural structure built on a stone platform, and its framing method is very unique. This roof is not only aesthetically pleasing, but more importantly, it creates a triangular shaped elevated layer at the top of the ancient building, resembling a "warehouse" for storing hot air. In summer, the hot indoor air is stored in this space, making it cooler and more pleasant. Meanwhile, due to the presence of this space, the temperature changes inside the ancient building have been well regulated, making it more comfortable. The lifting beam structure is cleverly used in ancient architecture, allowing people to feel the charm and uniqueness of ancient architecture.

Eaves are a prominent feature of ancient Chinese architecture, and their construction not only reflects the wisdom and skills of ancient craftsmen, but also endows buildings with unique artistic styles and functions. As early as the Spring and Autumn period, the Warring States period, and the Qin Dynasty, overhanging eaves had already been widely used in architecture. The eaves of buildings in the Qin Dynasty were already relatively wide, which not only increased the aesthetic appeal of the building, but also facilitated its long-term preservation and played a role in insulation and shading from the cold.

The layout of ancient Chinese architecture is deeply influenced by the traditional Five Elements theory, and until modern times, residential buildings facing north and south were still the preferred choice for Chinese people.
