Aesthetics of Ancient China Architecture

Traditional Chinese architecture is a witness to history and civilization, a crystallization of the wisdom and experience of predecessors, and a common cultural heritage of humanity.

Mr. Liang Sicheng, a famous Chinese architect, once said, "The glazed roof tiles clearly represent the characteristics of Chinese art

Ms. Lin Huiyin, the first famous female architect in China, also believes that "a building with an already beautiful outline, combined with the grandeur of the colored glass, will have a flawless crown.

Among many roof forms, glazed roof tiles are the most representative of Chinese style roofs. As one of the main materials of ancient Chinese architecture, glazed roof tiles have witnessed nearly half of China's history.

The ancient people of our country had the technique of making glass as early as the Western Zhou Dynasty, and in the Western Han Dynasty, products of firing architectural glass appeared, gradually applied to royal palaces and temple buildings, and had been fully applied in the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The colors of glazed roof tiles are generally divided into four types: yellow, green, green, and black. With the continuous development of technology, other colors can also be fired. Chinese ancient architecture places great emphasis on the color of tiles and walls, which not only reflects the beauty of appearance, but also has strict regulations on their use due to their high cost. Among them, yellow glazed tiles are the most noble and are only used in palaces, tombs, and the most sacred temples.

The use of Chinese glazed tiles not only has aesthetic appreciation, but also has various scientific aspects. Chinese glazed tiles have characteristics such as waterproofing, anti-corrosion, and low thermal conductivity, which can maintain a constant temperature inside the building, avoid external weathering, and maintain the dryness, cleanliness, and safety of the building. This is also an important reason why glazed roof tiles can be widely used in ancient architecture, especially palace architecture.
