Waterproof Components in Ancient Chinese Architecture - Glazed Tiles

Chinese ancient architecture has always received worldwide attention due to its unique and reasonable wooden structure, colorful paintings, and various roof forms. The common roof appearance forms include the gable-on-hip roof, pyramidal roof, overhanging gable roof and flush gable roof, and some uncommon ones. From the number of floors, it can also be divided into single layer eaves, double eaves, and triple eaves. The composition of these roofs is made by combining tiles fired from clay. If architecture is frozen music, then tiles are beautiful notes in the movement. These roofs, composed of tiles, go up to the imperial residence and down to the royal mansion, expressing people's infinite longing for a beautiful place to live.

The types of roof materials used in ancient Chinese architecture are very diverse. Things like thatch, wooden boards, metal, stone, and even shells have been applied to corresponding needs, and the most commonly used in various dynasties is the "ceramic tile" formed from ordinary soil, which has been quenched by fire, washed by water, and subjected to repeated tempering.

The roof is the most visually appealing and visually diverse part of an ancient building. The ceramic tiles in China are generally divided into two categories: one is the ceramic tiles fired with ordinary clay. Another type is derived from ceramic tiles, which are coated with a layer of glazed glaze.

There are two ways to present glass, and each of them has its own development. One is a crystalline product fired at high temperature, which is rich in color, with crystal clear and dazzling quality, and is often worn as decoration. Another method is to apply a glaze substance on the surface of ceramic products, which is then fired at high temperature to form glazed products with crystalline glaze on the surface, which are widely used in people's lives, tombs, and buildings.

Chinese glazed tile is an advanced building material that is made by crushing and calcining clay, shale, and other materials into tiles, cooling them out of the kiln, pouring a layer of glazed glaze, and then firing them again. Glass tiles have been favored by royal families throughout history due to their excellent waterproof, anti-corrosion, and thermal insulation functions, as well as their diverse forms, rich and colorful colors, and strong plasticity.
