Chinese Drama and Ancient Chinese Architecture

Drama and architecture, although different artistic forms, have many similarities in many aspects behind their artistic representations. Human ritual activities not only have value for the ritual itself, but also profoundly affect all aspects of human life. For example, in traditional Chinese society, due to the profound influence of Confucianism, life is carried out according to a specific standard, which is called the "ritual system". It gives Chinese people's lives a strong ceremonial characteristic.

Drama is a refinement of real life and a mirror of life. And life is inherently characterized by drama. From a dramatic perspective, it is easier to grasp the structure of real life. As a material carrier of life, architecture, like the stage of drama, inevitably reflects the structural context of life through carving patterns. In this sense, architecture has been dramatized. On the other hand, architecture serves as a carrier, and people's daily lives inside are recorded and depicted, creating dramatic character maps one after another. Art originates from life, so the influence between drama and architecture should be complementary.

Drama brings architecture and the people who live in it into carved stories, making people feel "as if the truth is within sight".

Since the 16th century, dramatic themes have been applied in architecture, and in the 17th century, the "background themes" directly related to drama developed the fastest. The craftsman moved a large number of theatrical scenes onto the building components, using a group painting form to leave typical scenes that the owner likes to watch on the wall, meticulously crafted, and ready to enjoy at any time.
