Black Glazed Roof Tile

People are familiar with ancient Chinese palace buildings, which are basically "red walls, green tiles," and "resplendent and magnificent." However, in the Shenyang Palace Museum, there is a very unique building, which is completely different from other buildings in the Shenyang Palace Museum in style and seems out of place.

The roof of the Palace Museum in Shenyang is decorated with yellow glazed tiles, green trim edges, and multicolored ornaments. However, this building is decorated with black glazed tiles, green trim edges, and the entire body has no bright colors. The single building is large in scale. It looks like there are two floors outside, but actually there are three floors. It is the Wensu Pavilion, which is very famous throughout China.

The Wensu Pavilion in the Shenyang Imperial Palace is extremely famous not only for its unique architectural style, but also for its world-renowned collection of the Complete Book of the Four Libraries. At the same time, it is also the largest library built in royal palaces in history.

Since ancient times, there have been many well-known library pavilions in China, and it is one of the most famous and influential of which should be one of the four largest library pavilions in the Qing Dynasty.

The Wensu Pavilion we are seeing now has all its doors, windows, and columns painted green, and the painted exterior eaves are also dominated by cool shades of blue, green, and white. The roof is trimmed with black glazed tiles and green edges, which is truly amazing.

Black represents water. The Wensu Pavilion was built to store the "Complete Book of the Four Libraries". The book most taboos fire, with black tiles as the top, implying the meaning of "suppressing fire with water.".
