The difference of cornice of ancient buildings in North and South China

The cornice is a unique architectural structure in China. It is a special treatment and creation on the eaves of ancient Chinese buildings. The eaves, especially the eaves at the corners of the eaves, are raised upward. They are often used at the corners of the roofs of pavilions, platforms, buildings, pavilions, palaces, temples and other buildings. The four corners of the eaves stretch out like birds spreading their wings. They are light and lively, so they are also often called cornices.

The cornice is one of the important expressions of ancient Chinese architectural style. It can be seen in palaces, temples and ordinary pavilions. Its design and composition are ingenious, like birds spreading their wings, light and lively, as if there is a breath of air on the ground supporting the eaves, which makes the building have a sense of flexibility and pleasing to the eyes. I have to admire the ancient Chinese architects. Even the eaves in daily life should be built with such beauty, scrupulously and uncompromisingly. It is a wonderful work. It is the spirit of craftsman to prefer deficiency to abuse.

There are also many types of cornices, which are either low, straight, or high. Different forms of cornices create different artistic effects, or they are light, simple, or dignified. Pavilion, platform, building, and pavilion should use cornices to indicate their identity and express their feelings.
The height and length of cornices often become the difficulty and key point of architectural design. Only when the design is just right, can it be light but not frivolous, simple but not mechanical, dignified but not rigid.

There are many high cornices in the wing corners of southern China, so the craftsmanship is often more free and creative. In architecture, eaves are used to show wealth. The higher the eaves rise, the richer the owner is.

In addition to the different aesthetic views caused by different regions, the rain in the south is often heavy, and the cornice of the building is high, so the rain on the roof can be thrown as far as possible (the curve is the best parabola) to reduce the damage of rain to the building foundation.
The cornices in the north are not as high as those in the south. The eaves themselves are relatively straight, but the overhanging eaves are quite prominent.  In addition, because there is much snow in the north, the flat eaves will not exert pressure on the tiles at the end.

The cornices in the north appear double eaves, which is used to expand the weight of the roof and the roof body, increase the height and level of the roof, enhance the majesty and solemnity of the roof, and adjust the proportion of the roof and the roof body.
