The characteristics of Tang Dynasty architecture in China

In the early years of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the country was unified and relatively stable for more than 100 years, providing conditions for social and economic prosperity. Kaiyuan and Tianbao years reached their peak in the middle of Tang Dynasty. Although the "An Shi Rebellion" began to decline, but the end of the Tang Dynasty is still worthy of the Chinese feudal social economic and cultural development of the climax period. The construction technology and art also have great development and improvement, the main characteristics are as follows:

1: large scale and well-planned. Chang 'an, the capital of the Tang Dynasty, was originally planned and built by the Sui Dynasty, but it was expanded after the Tang inherited it, making it the most magnificent and prosperous city in the world at that time. The planning of Chang 'an City is the most rigorous among the ancient capitals of China, and it even influenced the Bohai City of Tokyo, Japan's Pingcheng city (today's Nara city) and later the Ping'an City (today's Tokyo city). The Daming Palace of Tang Chang 'an was also very large, with the ruins covering more than three times the total area of the Forbidden City. The grandeur and breadth of other buildings, such as government offices, are also beyond the reach of any feudal dynasty.

2: the treatment of building groups is becoming more mature. During the Sui and Tang Dynasties, not only the overall urban planning was strengthened, but also the spatial combination of palaces and mausoleums that highlighted the main buildings and emphasized the foil technique in the direction of the vertical axis. This technique is the origin of the layout of palaces and tombs in Ming and Qing Dynasties.
3: Wood building has solved the technical problem of large area and large volume, and has been standardized. The standardization reflects the progress of the construction management level, accelerates the construction speed, and also promotes the architectural design.
4: the improvement of design and construction level. Master the design and construction of technical personnel, professional and skilled, specializing in public and private housing design and site command, and make a living.
5: masonry has been further developed. The main reason for this is the increase in the use of masonry. At present, the preserved Tang pagoda in our country are all masonry towers.
6: the truth and maturity of architectural art processing. The architectural style of the Tang Dynasty is characterized by grand spirit, neat and cheerful. The existing wood building material reflects the unity of the artistic processing and structure of the Tang Dynasty architecture. The structure of the dougong, the image of the pillar and the processing of the beam all make people feel the internal connection between the stress state and the image of the component itself, and achieve the unity of force and beauty. The tone is simple and lively, the roof is stretched flat, the doors and Windows are simple and unsophisticated, giving people a solemn and generous impression, which is not easy to find in the Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing architectural characteristics.
