Architectural characteristics of folk houses in North and South China

Chinese folk house culture has a long history. After five thousand years of development, it has evolved into a treasure of Chinese culture and is retained as a solidified carrier of art and culture up to now.
When it comes to architecture in southern China, many people immediately associate it with the beautiful picture of small Bridges and flowing water. Most of the small towns in the south of the Yangtze River flow through a small river, both banks are small grey houses, neat horse head walls and grey tiles.

The residential courtyard in the south is very small and the surrounding houses are connected as a whole. The residential buildings in the south mostly use the pierced structure and the housing combination is more flexible. In the south, the gables of houses are shaped like horses' heads, with white walls and black tiles and elegant colors. Southern water resources are relatively rich, water flowing from the front of the house, is also a scene. Rich people like to connect their houses with gardens. This is the garden. The southern garden does not need a large area, but it can create a wonderland.

As for the northern dwellings, in everyone's impression, they are mostly cave dwellings on the loess plateau and siheyuan in Beijing city. Simple and thick siheyuan is a traditional residential form in Beijing. Its proportion is moderate in size. The sun can shine into the room in winter, and the main room is warm in winter and cool in summer. The courtyard is a place for outdoor activities.

There are obvious differences between the north and south dwellings in China. It is the difference that roofing uses makings above all. The southern dwellings all use the roof with a larger slope and are paved with small green tiles, while the northern dwellings use flat roof or slightly flat slope roof. Some roofing materials are made of tri-compound soil, and the tiles are thick and large. The south rain, the need to leak, roof material requirements. In the dry north, roof material requirements are not as high as in the south. In terms of materials for external walls, the southern dwellings are mostly built with brick empty bucket walls, and some are surrounded by wooden boards, while the northern dwellings are built with tri-clay walls, adobe walls and brick solid walls.
