Why are there so many antique buildings in China?

In ancient Chinese architecture, whether it is palaces or dwellings , the architectural ideas and building materials are the same, and most of them are made of wood. Coupled with the destruction of wars and other external factors, much less can be preserved in history than in the West. Western churches and palaces are all made of stone, keeping a distance from the common people, and it takes hundreds of years to build, so there are almost no antique buildings in the West.

In fact, we must correctly understand the word antique. Some buildings follow the ancient system in terms of style, manufacturing method and materials, as if they were built by the ancients. This is called inheritance of tradition, not imitation. Just like moon cakes, the fillings have tasted like this for thousands of years, but I have never heard of "antique" moon cakes. However, some buildings only have a shape, and the construction methods and materials are all modern, so they can become antique. For example, in many places, techniques such as rafters, beams, mortise and tenon are abandoned, and a model is directly cast with modern materials.

Most of the current antique buildings are tourist attractions and commercial buildings, which themselves are generated as a kind of consumer demand, providing a style to attract consumers. This is a market demand, and there is nothing wrong with antiques. For example, in a village, to develop tourism, the antique buildings are naturally more attractive to tourists than the ordinary dull modern buildings. It enhances the surrounding urban environment, drives regional development, and highlights urban characteristics.

Traditional residential buildings are now difficult to meet the needs of contemporary people's lives, so there are fewer and fewer traditional dwellings in big cities. For people living in cities, antique buildings can arouse people's curiosity to know ancient buildings and want to understand ancient buildings.
