Color selection of glazed roof tiles

Generally, yellow, green and blue are the most popular colors for glazed tiles, and yellow is the most noble color. It is only used on the main buildings such as the imperial palace and the altar temple. Even in the imperial palace, not all buildings are yellow glazed tiles, and the secondary buildings are green and green borders. However, with the maturity of modern technology and the change of people's preferences, the color of glazed tile is rich and colorful.

Yellow is the most popular color in Chinese glazed tile architecture. The color of Chinese soil is red in the south, black in the north and yellow in the Central Plains. Yellow land is also the birthplace of Chinese culture, so the five elements theory believes that yellow represents the central position, has always been identified as a noble color. In the Tang Dynasty, yellow was regarded as the special color representing the royal family. In the Song Dynasty, the imperial palace of the feudal emperor began to adopt yellow glazed tile roof. To the Ming and Qing dynasties, it was clearly stipulated that only the emperor's palaces, gardens, mausoleums, altar temples and temples sealed by the emperor could be used yellow glazed tiles.

Green is the color of the second grade, the imperial palace, royal gardens, mausoleums and temple secondary buildings and even the main hall of important temples can use green glazed tile roof.

Blue is a special case. The most famous is the Temple of Heaven, which is roofed with blue glass tiles to symbolize the sky.

Black (gray) is the most common color. The buildings of aristocratic mansions, temples, ancestral halls and common people's homes are often roofed with black tiles. But there are exceptions, such as wenyuan Pavilion (library) in the Forbidden City, which should be roofed with yellow tiles, but used black tiles, this is because the Taoist "Five elements" believe that black represents water, library is prone to fire, containing "water to suppress fire" meaning.

Nowadays, most people simply rely on personal preference in choosing the color of glazed tile. There were no ancient restrictions and more freedom of choice.
