Beijing Hutong

When we talk about Beijing, apart from being well-known as the capital of China, it is also well-known for its unique architecture-siheyuan(四合院). Today we will take a look at the architectural features of Beijing Hutongs.

There are not only famous historical scenic spots in Beijing, but also Beijing Hutongs full of historical charm. They are telling the unique Hutong culture of Beijing. Beijing Hutong culture is not only the context of the city, the road of traffic, it is also a place for ordinary people in Beijing to live, and an important stage for the development and evolution of Beijing’s history and culture. It records historical changes. At first glance, Beijing’s hutongs are full of gray walls and gray tiles. In fact, it is not the case. As long as you string a few hutongs and chat with the old residents of the hutongs for a while, you will find that each hutong has its own story and contains a strong cultural atmosphere, like a museum of folk customs. It is the imprint of people’s various social life.

Wandering through it, everywhere looks like places of interest and historical sites, and like an encyclopedia in Beijing. Many bricks and tiles in the hutongs have hundreds of years of history. The hutong courtyards, large and small, show the lives of Beijing residents, their lifestyles, tastes of life, and neighborhood relationships.

Almost all buildings in Hutong are siheyuan. Siheyuan is a building surrounded by four houses from east, west, south and north in a square symmetrical form, symbolizing harmony and reunion. Large and small courtyards are lined up next to each other, and the passage between them is the alley.

Hutong, an ancient city lane peculiar to Beijing, has become a carrier of Beijing culture. The gray bricks and wall in the hutong carry the breath of life in old Beijing. In the neighborhood among the residents, only when you are in it can you have the deepest experience.
