Retreat and Reflection Garden

Retreat and Reflection Garden is located in Tongli Town, Wujiang District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, and China. The designer of Retreat and Reflection Garden, Yuan Long, cleverly used less than ten acres of area to design a series of buildings such as the Sleeping Cloud Pavilion, which embodies Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism and other philosophies, religious ideas, and traditional arts such as landscape poems and paintings.

The whole park covers an area of 9.8 mu, and the building structure is divided into two parts: east and west. The west is hall residence, and the east is garden. There is a moon cave gate between the two parts, and there are two brick carvings on the gate. Outside the cave gate, a pavilion stands near the water for visitors to watch the fish and lotus in the pond. Going out to the north is the corridor, with stone carvings by the Qing Dynasty calligrapher and painter Yun Nantian embedded on the wall; there is a vase door in the northwest corner, and after entering the door, there is a small building called "Lansheng Pavilion". To the east, enter the four-sided hall, that is, to the center of the whole park, you can look around different scenery.

Yuan Long, the designer of Retreat and Reflection Garden, knows all about poetry, writing and painting. According to the characteristics of Jiangnan water town, he adapted measures to local conditions and conceived ingeniously to build this garden in two years. The garden occupies only 9.8 acres, which is simple and unpretentious, yet quiet and elegant, with the architectural style of Jiangnan gardens in the late Qing Dynasty. The Retreat and Reflection Garden has a unique layout, with pavilions, terraces, buildings, corridors, squares, bridges, halls, rooms, and penthouses all available. With a pool as the center, the buildings are like floating on water. The layout is compact and natural, combined with plant configuration, dotted with four season’s scenery, giving people a sense of clarity, tranquility.
