Garden of Ten Scepters

Garden of Ten Scepters, also known as Ding’s Garden, is located in Huijia Paifang Street, Weifang City, Shandong Province, China.  Weifang, located on the Shandong Plain, was a place with frequent commercial activities in the Qing Dynasty. There used to be 16 ancient gardens. Garden of Ten Scepters built during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty was the most famous one and the only one remaining. Because Weifang City is located at the junction of the south and the north, the style of the garden also shows two styles of the south and the north.

This garden is indeed famous for being small. Its characteristics are: small floor area and more buildings. On the ground of only 2,000 square meters, there are 24 large and small buildings with 67 houses in total. The layout of the garden is rigorous and dense, with rockery, ponds, curved bridges, corridors, pavilions, studies, guest rooms, etc. cleverly combined together, compact and not crowded. Being on the scene, like in a painting, is refreshing, which fully reflects the high artistic level of courtyard architecture in China.

The ancient buildings of Garden of Ten Scepters are typical courtyard-style buildings of the Han nationality in northern China: inside it contains a "well" pattern, which is symmetrical, stable, dignified and serious. The inner courtyard of the quadrangle courtyard runs from the second door to the main room. The door is generally located at the front left. When entering the door, you can see the screen wall. The courtyard is deep and quiet and cannot be seen by outsiders. Each courtyard here is connected by a side door, aisle or courtyard, extending in all directions, extending from east to west. There are more than 20 courtyards with about 250 rooms. The earliest house was built in the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, and it can be regarded as a long-standing northern dwelling.

Garden of Ten Scepters is the only one remaining among the sixteen famous gardens in Weixian. It is a condensed history of Weixian and a vehicle for exploring the lives of predecessors. Visiting Garden of Ten Scepters, visitors can experience the charm and pleasure of it.

These wonderful buildings can be built with clay roof tiles.
