Tang Dynasty Architecture

China has discovered the tang Dynasty architecture remains in Shanxi. The wooden buildings of the same period remain in the entire Asian region, only a few of which are still surviving in Japan, and they are all imitation Tang buildings.

Nan Chan Temple: The oldest timber-framed building

Nan Chan Temple is in Lijiazhuang Village, Wutai County, Xinzhou City, Shanxi Province. According to Qing Jiaqing's Twenty-five Years (1820) "Repairing the Inscriptions of Nan Chan Temple", Nan Chan Temple was originally built by Guo and Lijiazhuang villages for monks who went to Wutai Mountain to spread Soutrh Zen, hence the name Nan Chan Temple.

Nan Chan Temple is south-facing and consists of two small courtyards. The main hall of the Great Buddha Hall has a wide base, accounting for almost half of the entire courtyard, which greatly highlights the main position of the main hall. The bucket arch is made of huge materials, and there are no short columns on the flat beams in the hall. Only two forks are used to support the ridge purlin, which is very simple and powerful, and maintains the inherent architectural characteristics of the Han and Tang dynasties. The whole hall is solid, simple, ancient and elegant, reflecting the architectural style of the Tang Dynasty.

Foguang Temple: China's first national treasure

In 1937, Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin, with the guidance of the "Painting of Mount Wutai" in the Dunhuang Murals, they found the Foguang Temple in the quiet deep mountains, and discovered the Tang Dynasty architecture, Tang Dynasty sculpture, Tang Dynasty mural...The main hall of Foguang Temple is not tall, it seems ordinary, but it is called "China's first national treasure" by Liang Sicheng, because it breaks the assertion of Japanese scholars: there is no wooden structure of the Tang Dynasty and its predecessors on the Chinese land.

The architectural scale of the Tang Dynasty was magnificent, magnificent, solemn, neat but not rigid, and simple but full of vitality, which is the perfect embodiment of the spirit of that era.

The building mainly built with clay roof tiles.
