A temple with a rare construction technique

——Tianting Temple

Tianqing Temple is a Buddhist building located in Cuilu Village, Cishan Town, 20 kilometers southwest of Wu'an City, Hebei Province, China. The temple faces south, north-south axis, and was built in the third year of Tianshun in the Ming Dynasty (1459). The temple is large in scale, with original buildings including the mountain gate, the heavenly king hall, the big buddha hall, the water and land hall, the king hall, and the bell and drum tower, covering an area of about 20,000 square meters. The Ming and Qing Dynasties were more prosperous and gradually abandoned after the Republic of China.

The main hall of Tianqing Temple sits south to the north and is located in the middle of the north-south central axis. Five rooms with a width of 21.82 meters, a depth of 13.06 meters, a building area of 315 square meters, a building height of 11 meters, and a rectangular platform in front of the main hall. There are 23 stone pillars, including 6 front eaves pillars, 4 front gold pillars, 2 middle pillars, 5 rear gold pillars, and 6 rear eaves pillars. There are 44 groups of colorful bucket arches under the eaves. The roof is covered with grey clay tiles and some classical decorations. The eaves are decorated with glazed tiles.

Tianqing Temple Hall is currently the earliest, most complete and most distinctive wooden structure preserved in Wu'an City and southern Hebei Province. It has a history of more than 500 years. His architectural style is special, the materials are large, and the structural layout is reasonable and concise. They all adopted the techniques of Yuan Dynasty architecture and still retained the techniques of early construction materials, which are relatively rare in southern Hebei Province. Now it is a key cultural relics protection unit in Hebei Province.
