Folk Houses South of the Yangtze

Folk houses south of the Yangtze are an important part of Chinese residential architecture. However, regardless of whether the Chinese are in the south or in the north, the common characteristics of their traditional houses are sitting north to south and paying attention to internal lighting; they are supported by wooden beams, brick, stone, and earth retaining walls; centered on the hall, carved beams and decorative roof, cornices.

The history of folk houses south of the Yangtze can be traced back to the Hemudu culture about seven thousand years ago. The ancestors lived and thrived on this land, inheriting all their residences and lifestyles. In the Shang Dynasty, residential settlements with initial scales have been formed here. Since the Han Dynasty, officials have lived here. During the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties, the war situation in the north caused a large number of people to migrate to the south. This trend led to the rapid development of the economy and Han culture in the south. In the Tang Dynasty, official houses of considerable size have been formed here.

With the establishment of Hangzhou in the Southern Song Dynasty, Jiangnan has experienced unprecedented development in politics, economy and culture. By the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Jiangnan had become the most economically and culturally developed region in the country. Officials, wealthy landlords, wealthy businessmen, literati and scholars chose to build houses, villas, pavilions and pavilions everywhere. Due to its large population and precious land, Jiangnan ’s architecture is extremely space-saving, and its architectural art is therefore more sophisticated and lacks style. But after the hands of skillful craftsmen, the houses housed in the gurgling water are still captivating.

The grey tiles and white walls of folk houses form a simple and elegant style. The roof is made of grey tiles, and the outer wall is made of bricks. The roof, eaves, walls, Guanyindou ridge or horse head wall form a rhythm of staggered shapes and deep courtyards!
